The best fertilizer known to gardens is green, well more like black, but you get the idea. Vermicompost is catching on in gardens as the best way to keep plants healthy, grow faster, and disease free. A little know industry just a few years ago, the vermicompost system has made gardens much more healthy and is used on the biggest plants in the world.
Up until recently the powers of vermicompost were unknown to many. Worm castings, a large part of the vermicompost culture, has been used to grow the same plants that are in today’s records. The secret is out now and worm castings are a top seller for gardens.
The idea is very similar to a traditional compost bin, but it uses the help of worms to make the composting quicker and better for use on plant. In a normal compost bin the organic matter is broken down by bacteria alone. In a vermicompost system, the bacteria break down the matter along with the worms. The worms also eat the bacteria and leave behind a very rich soil-like product known as worm castings.
The castings can be spread around the base of the plants, or dissolved in water and sprayed onto the plants. Microbial activity is very high in castings and protects the plants from diseases along with adding very important vitamins to the plants.
A simple vermicompost system can be operated outside with the worms you already have in your yard. Adding a thick bed of wet leaves on the ground will bring out a lot of worms that already live in your soil. Further, adding the compost material on top will bring the worms into your heap to start the process. Indoor systems are also very popular. They generally include a plastic tub and large amounts of shredded newspaper. The newspaper acts as a material for the worms to call home, and is also digested along the way. Vermicompost is very effective as the worms eat about half their body weight in compost every week!
